Biomat buildup and drainfield "rejuvenation"/additive claims — what works and what doesn't?

State rules are the floor. Figures here are TCEQ minimums under 30 TAC Chapter 285. Your county can be stricter and around here most are — check your county before you rely on a number.

The biomat is normal and functional, not inherently a defect: "as effluent continually flows into the soil, the microbes eating the components of the wastewater form a biological mat" that "slows the water's movement through the soil and helps keep the area below the mat from becoming saturated" (Texas A&M AgriLife, L-5227 Septic Tank/Soil Absorption Field). It becomes a failure mechanism when excess water or escaping solids thicken it — EPA notes that solids pushed into the field "clog the pipes" and "increase the thickness of the biomat" (EPA). On additives, TCEQ is explicit: "do not add chemical additives or the so-called enzymes into your OSSF. Some of these additives may even be harmful to the tank's operation" (TCEQ); AgriLife/TWRI adds that many additives "have not been proven to be beneficial" and "can resuspend particles that are settled at the bottom, potentially harming the drainfield/sprayfield" (TWRI/AgriLife EM-125). Extension research reaches the same conclusion — a study of 48 septic tanks found no difference in sludge level between tanks using bacterial additives and those not, hydrogen peroxide "degrade[s] soil structure in a drainfield," and no additive substitutes for design, inspection, and pumping every three to five years (WSU Extension). What does work: pumping on schedule, an effluent filter that "removes additional solids... and keeps them from clogging the absorption field" (AgriLife L-5227), water conservation, and keeping roof/concrete runoff away from the field (AgriLife L-5227); jetting a clogged distribution line can restore some systems, but a fully saturated field needs replacement (Harris County Septic, industry source).
