Do not pump during flooded or saturated conditions: "at best, pumping the tank is only a temporary solution," and "under worst conditions, pumping it out could cause the tank to try to float out of the ground and may damage the inlet and outlet pipes"; opening the tank while soil is saturated also lets mud and silt in (EPA, What to Do after the Flood). While waters are up, "do not use the sewage system until water in the soil absorption field is lower than the water level around the house," conserve water aggressively — "the only way to prevent this backup is to relieve pressure on the system by using it less" — and stay off the field, since "do not compact the soil over the soil absorption field by driving or operating equipment in the area" (EPA). After the water recedes, pump both the tank and the lift station to remove silt, "examine all electrical connections for damage before restoring electricity," check the manhole cover and inspection ports, and have the system professionally inspected if you see settling or an inability to accept water — "if the soil absorption field is clogged with silt, a new system may have to be installed" (EPA). EPA's disaster guidance adds: rope off a flooded system, avoid the area, do not dig around it, and reduce water use until inspection (EPA, Natural Disaster Preparedness and Recovery for Decentralized Systems); if sewage backed up indoors, disinfect with a 10% bleach / 90% water mixture and keep the area unused until dry at least 24 hours (EPA). In Texas, aerobic sprayers running during or right after rain suggest "a bad seal on a lid, tank or a leak/hole in the line" letting rainwater into the tank — call your service provider (Waller County).
